A Day of Goodbyes
Today was a milestone for Gordon - his last working day at ExxonMobil in Brussels. After almost 16 years of working in Brussels (and thirty years for the company), many colleagues and friends in the organisation have made contact to say goodbye and wish him well as he retires. Moving from UK to Belgium in 2000, we never expected to stay here this long, but our expat existence has been rewarding on many levels - work for Gordon, education for the girls and of course the friendships formed while we've lived in this culturally diverse city. Many of these good friends are no longer in Belgium, having returned to their home countries, but we've warned them we're heading their way in 2016.

Thank you for setting up this blog, Linda. Congratulations on retirement, Gordon. A whole new world awaits you both and I hope it will be happy and glorious. I tutor at home, massage, sing in a choir, volunteer at a hospice, spend more time with 91 year old Mum ( in law) swim like a fish, in local pool and in the warm Med ( when taken there on holidays, lucky fish! and have returned to my piano and play, tentatively in church, and loudly at home, with headphones. All this since leaving my teaching in a school, at the end of 2013. My baking and cooking have improved - I often get A's or B plus, from the chief examiner, ( Monsieur ABP himself, a very strict judge! ) and I've had time to join the odd French class, at Cafe Rouge, in St Albans. Also, I'm free to hop to Kent, to stay with family and help with Baby.
ReplyDeleteAlso - I write long comments such as this one as I am free to doodle and dawdle - and you will both see how great it is to be free of structured work - and you will find 1001 good things to do.
A visit to Hemel would be a highlight of the year - for us, and for you, we hope.
We have booked Lisbon for April, and a family holiday in hills near Turin for May/June half term break, with George Myfanwy and baby Alexander. His first trip abroad.
So all the best as you set off!
LOVE ysy / grandmere
Congrats Gordon and happy trails to the both of you! Mark
